And this is a done as a community service to help you understand how to have pest free homes and in Jasper, Georgia, in the Blue Ridge, Georgia, and really pretty much anywhere in North Georgia, all the neighboring neighborhoods. If you’re in that area, then you need to listen to Fred. Now Fred is going to talk about something that we all were really bothered by these guys. In fact, sometimes in winter, I think you get a warm day, they show up again, flies, you know, Fred, why do we have flies, you know, for pretty much any time of the year and what do you do to help us manage this pest of flies? Wow, the bigger the bigger problem, I think in north Georgia is that when we don’t have severe enough winners to to even impact the insect population there. I don’t know the correct word. There is a word for it. But there what it means in mammals, it would be a cold or cold blooded animals. So I think really what happens is this their metabolism slows down when it gets colder. But yeah, yesterday was pretty warm here. And I actually did have some flies in my house yesterday. So anyway, flies are related to they’re kind of in the same family as mosquitoes, gnats. They are an insect. And this is important actually, for flies or the control of flies. They’re an insect that undergoes a complete metamorphosis, which that which means that they have four stages of development, they have the egg, the larva, the pupae in there and ultimately the adult. Now the fly larva or what are referred to as maggots, then maggots have a very wide range of feeding habits dependent on the species of fly. Some are plant feeders, and can be extremely serious agricultural pests, while others feed on rotting or decaying remains of plants or animals or animal excrement. Most adult flies have wings in readily fly. As opposed to other orders of winged insects which have two pairs flies only have one pair of wings. In place of that second pair of wings. They have a type of a knob balancing organ if you will. Flies can be extremely serious passed in and around buildings, because they can transmit disease organisms and filth. They also leave deposits of this is kind of sitting in regurgitated food and excrement on walls, no furniture, and even the toaster used to make your morning toast. They too are also a nuisance. This due to their flying and buzzing around people’s faces and landing on food and your appliances and silverware and stuff. Flies can also be a nuisance in outdoor eating areas like you know if you’re trying to have a picnic in your yard or you go camping, open air markets there they can be huge problems. They’re although they’re several 1000 species of flies only are a few persistent pests that we deal with in and around buildings. This includes the house fly the fruit fly and blow flies. And those actually all fall under the heading of filth flies. Several kinds of filth flies can be found in around farms, residential homes, and and in restaurants, food handling areas. Food processing plants, they’re generally scavengers in nature, the filth, flies and many transmitted diseases to man. Regardless of the advancements that have been made in chemical controls in our industry, sanitation is still the best method for controlling filth flows. Filth flies, seek out breeding places where garbage, animal droppings, rotten vegetables are allowed to accumulate.
If you can dry spread out or otherwise get rid of, you know, dog, cat or other animal droppings. Do not let garbage accumulate in the open and make sure the trash cans have solid bottoms and tight fitting lids, you will make a lot of progress in getting rid of your fly problem. Tight fitting screens on windows and doors are essential in keeping flies out of your home. Barns food processing areas. The adult stages of the house fly are typically found in buildings, restaurants, homes, offices, hospitals, grocery stores, those types of areas. They will seek out these locations because of the abundance of shelter they provide the food they provide, in, but most importantly for the suitable breeding sites they provide. Beyond being annoying, house flies are capable of carrying disease causing organisms on their body. Flies can and will contaminate food eating utensils. Other items that remember the toaster I mentioned earlier with these organisms and and they may transmit salmonella, dysentery, typhoid, cholera, leprosy, and hepatitis. In addition to the disease organisms these flies can carry the eggs of pinworms, hookworms, tapeworms and which can occasionally infect humans. house flies are claimed to be the greatest threat of people’s health of any species of insect due to their ability to transmit disease and parasitic organisms. But don’t house flies are present throughout the year, but are most plentiful in late summer and early fall in adult house fly can live from 30 to 60 days. But more importantly, can fly as far as 20 miles they normally their range is confined to about four miles. But they can fly as far as 20. For the house flat, they kind of stay in smaller areas if the food is plentiful. In during the adult stage, the housefly will feed on several substances, including the or you know, the decaying organic matter, and a variety of liquid flute foods, they’re attracted to indoor prep serving areas. They also leave these straw colored spots of regurgitated food and dark spots of fecal matter on surfaces where they feed and or rest.
