Fred Talley
Well, Mikey, we’re quickly approaching the season for fire ants here in North Georgia. They begin in the spring and can continue throughout the summer. But they can be a huge problem for people here in the mountains. As a homeowner, you’re probably likely familiar with the fire ant, often it’s a problem. What you see is the earthen mounds that they build. But a less than desirable method of identification would be when they sting you. Fire ants earn their name because of the venom that they inject in you causes a very intense irritation. And some people have fairly severe reactions. A small number those reactions can result in death for some people, especially people that are very sensitive or have allergies to the fire ant. When the ants are very active and aggressive, they’re capable of killing. They can kill young wildlife, and they produce sores on humans. In some in some people can cause nausea. Fire ants are ants that most everybody knows. They build their nest or mounds in loose soil, where the ground is fairly dry, but receives a lot of sunshine. Given to the fact that they build their mounds in in lawns and wide open spaces like athletic fields or parks is areas like that the fire ant is generally in a conflict with people. Because of their staying behavior, they generally make some intolerable in most places. As a fire ant mound is disturbed, the worker ants appear to boil up or or swarm up from the earth. And with their aggressive behavior, they will sting anybody it’s in the immediate area. A typical yard with with fire ants will have several mounds. Larger yards pastures can have dozens of mounds. Occasionally, they will nest inside a home or a larger building like hospital or nursing home. But they can especially in slab house can be found building beneath bathtubs. Because they can access the soil through the plumbing penetration in the slab, or next to water heaters are near other sources of warmth. As we approach the summer months, it’s helpful to know that it’s easier to prevent a fire ant infestation than it is to eliminate an existing existing one. After they’re established, the mounds may need several treatments to fully get rid of the problem. That’s really one of the reasons why it’s important to contact your your pest management professional, whoever they may be, as soon as you suspect you have an issue with fire ants so they can take a look. We actually have several annual customers that we that we serve as their yard annually. And we will start in April. With that treatment process.
