If you have a pest problem, Faith pest control is the solution to that problem. And the man behind the solution is my good friend Fred tally. Fred, are you there?
I’m here, Mikey.
Well, you’re gonna go fishing today. But it’s not for fish. It’s not for a bug. It’s for silver fish. Now, I know silver fish. I’ll tell you where I’ve seen them. I’ve seen them in the shower and the bathtub and in the sink. So you maybe explain to me why they show up there. What are they and what can we do to take care of that pesky fish that’s in the house.
So Mikey silver, Smith, silversmith, silver fish are actually they’re small insects. That obviously just like you said, they they infest homes. They’re not particularly dangerous. Actually, they’re harmless, but they can damage your property. And in some people like trigger allergies, they’re kind of a shiny, silvery gray. And they have scales, and I guess that’s for they get to term silver fish. And then 10 I would guess 90% of insects have antennae in there literally, globally found they’re found everywhere. silver fish like the dark. They’ll typically hide during the day avoiding direct sunlight. If you happen to move an object that they might be hiding under, they’ll just dart out and then find another hiding hiding spot relatively quickly. The see the female actually lays eggs almost constantly after they reach maturity. They’ll lay their eggs and cracks and crevices around the home. And the eggs hatch in about three weeks. And then the young reached full maturity in four to six weeks. So you can see the propensity for reproduction is in building numbers is pretty high. The juveniles look just like the adults, they’re just smaller and white instead of the silvery gray color. silver fish actually live a fairly long life. They can live anywhere from two to eight years, which for an insect that’s they years, that’s a long time. They they have the ability to live a long time without food, sometimes as much as a year without food, but it’s like most living creatures, they’re sensitive to moisture and need at a minimum a high humidity to be able to survive. silverfish exist in damp, dark, cool places large populations can actually develop and brand new buildings that have like wet brick or stone so that because they need that moisture. They’re commonly found in basements, sinks, bathtubs, showers, just like Mike was saying. They’ll be they can be in closets. There’ll be behind the baseboards, inside bookcases. The gaps are around the windows and doors. They are chewing insects, and they eat both carbohydrates and proteins like flour, oats, meats, paper, cardboard, books, glue, vegetables, cereals, other dead insects. Sometimes, new homeowners unknowingly bring them into their new home inside cardboard boxes. Among their you know important paper documents that they have in books that may have been stored in an infested area. Generally, they’re silverfish are regarded as just a nuisance pest but they won’t hurt you, but they can contaminate your food supplies. silver fish will also leave their droppings behind and foodstuffs. They’ve infested so especially if you knowingly have had an infestation you might want to check your other food products just to make sure there’s no dead bugs or insect droppings in those food products. Well silver fish will not make you sick or bite or stain you they can literally destroy your home. Since they’re chewing insects, they have the ability to eat through your department your belongings, if you will, and their fecal deposits we’ll call staining. As I mentioned earlier, cerebral silver fish like to eat glue and they will eat the glue off the wallpaper and your bookbindings curtains furniture coverings, they like starchy materials to like paper and wood. I have read some literature that says they prefer glazed paper that has a starchy coating or a glossy smooth finish. They can potentially eat literally eat some of your books and magazines because they like to start so well. Any any linens are clothes that you use starch on when you clean or or iron them can be a prime target for silverfish, they can eat your linens, clothes, curtains, furniture, fabrics, anything made of silk or cotton. You know homeowner can try several methods to get rid of silverfish prior to contacting a professional pest control troll service. And these are silverfish are almost as common as cockroaches. Here in North Georgia, it can be very difficult to manage that infestation it but if you’re trying it yourself, it’s best to utilize all but at least some of the following tips I’m going to give you so reduce food sources for the silverfish by keeping all your food products and sealed airtight containers and store all of your food in only one area of the house. Not in in in various areas. Vacuum your carpets floors furniture regularly. Meaning probably every other day is not a bad idea, as well as clean up food debris and crumbs. silverfish love humidity and water. reduce those water sources by installing a dehumidifier in the basement or crawlspace. Keep your showers bathtubs, sinks, laundry room areas clean and dry. And in the crawlspace use a plastic sheeting or vapor barrier on the bare dirt and inside the crawlspace. Make sure that your yard is properly graded so that water flows away from the house and not to the house. And and as well keep your house in good repair specifically around the windows and doors. The the the seals and the trim exterior trim especially make sure that it’s caught. So that to keep them out of the females out of the cracks and crevices where they like to lay their eggs.
