Not only a serious nuisance in and around northern Georgia, mosquitoes are vectors of several serious diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis, West Nile virus, and Zika. The most common type of mosquito found in northern Georgia is the Asian Tiger mosquito. Also known as forest mosquitoes, Asian Tiger mosquitoes get their name from the while stripe down the center of their head and back as well as their striped black and white legs.
The main indicator of mosquito activity is the buzzing of the females as they fly and the presence of bites on your skin. Another telltale sign of a mosquito problem is the presence of immature mosquitoes in standing water.
The most effective way to prevent mosquito bites is to wear an insect repellant containing anr EPA-registered ingredient, such as DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon-eucalyptus. It is equally important to take steps toward preventing mosquito breeding grounds around your property. This means eliminating all standing water since mosquitoes can lay and hatch eggs in as little as a half inch of water. Places where mosquitoes can breed include baby pools, flowerpots, and birdbaths. Homeowners should also screen all doors and windows and keep their gutters flowing freely.
