Phorid Flies are often referred to as scuttle flies or humpback flies. They are a very small and
often overlooked insect that can quickly become a nuisance in homes, restaurants and other
areas where food is handled and prepared.
These tiny flies, despite their harmless appearance, have a rather peculiar lifestyle and can
pose some health risks.
Phorid Flies are typically small, approximately an eighth of an inch long. They have a distinct
humpbacked appearance which is how they earned their nickname. Their color can vary from
light brown to black and unlike other flies, phorid flies tend to scuttle across surfaces rather than
flying, hence the name “scuttle flies”.
Phorid flies thrive in moist, decaying organic matter. This makes them a common pest in places
like drains, garbage disposals and septic tanks. They can also be found in areas with poor
sanitation such as restaurants with unclean kitchens and/or homes with overflowing trash cans.
While phorid flies don’t bite, they can be a significant nuisance. Their presence can indicate
underlying sanitation issues and can contaminate food. Moreover, some species of phorid flies
can infest wounds and open sores causing myiasis or fly strike which is the parasitic infestation
of the body of a live animal by fly larvae that grow inside the host while feeding on its tissue.

The most effective way to control phorid flies is to eliminate their breeding grounds. This can
involve regularly cleaning your sink drains and garbage disposals as well as other potential
breeding sites.
Other ways to prevent phorid flies from multiplying inside your home is by sealing the open
cracks and crevices around the doors and windows of your home, storing your garbage in tightly
sealed containers and the use of phorid fly traps.
If you are dealing with a persistent phorid fly infestation, it may be necessary to contact a
professional pest control service.
While phorid flies might seem harmless, they can quickly become a big problem. By
understanding their habits and taking preventive measures, you can effectively manage these
pests and maintain a clean and fly-free environment.
