Welcome again to another episode of the faith pest control podcast. We do this podcast to educate everyone in Jasper, Georgia Ellijay, Georgia, Blairsville, Georgia, Blue Ridge, Georgia, and all over the North Georgia mountains to help you know what to do when it comes to pest control, extermination and we have pest expert Fred Talley to talk today about Carpet beetles. So, what is a carpet beetle? And what is the problems they cause? And what do you do at Faith pest control to make sure that Carpet beetles aren’t a problem for it? Wow, first off Carpet beetles. They’re a small, extremely small beetle by two or three millimeters long, they’re kind of a hard shell. In their colors can be mixed. Sometimes it’s just it’s a spotted pattern, generally white, yellow and brown color patterns. The adult beetle actually primarily feeds off of pollen. But the larva in the larva is not a hard shelled creature, it’s actually kind of a woolly looking creature. They feed off animal furs and fibers. The actual adult only lives 14 You know, two to two to eight weeks at the most generally. But the larvae egg live from one to three years before they even begin to approach adulthood and it’s a very it’s a long time that one to three year span but it depends on the environmental conditions and nutrition. Oh, a lot of times the carpet beetle adult or the female will lay their eggs inside of bird nests or close to a food source that where they the larva will hatch them again to feed. There really aren’t a lot of natural predators for the larva. Other than Wasp Wasp, they can attack the larva they’ll land on the larva try to sting and paralyze it and only defense of the larva has the ability to raise some small sharp hairs over his body. In general it’s not effective in in defending against a wasp and the Wasp usually wins. Once you know they wants the Wasp takes control they will make a hole inside inside the larva though, kind of lay their eggs and wasps will hatch and then consume the soon the larva. While wasps do help somewhat to control the carpet beetle population. infestations can be a big issue. Many museums, especially for your carpet beetle larva due to their habit of eating animal fibers because they’ll consume taxidermy and other you know, valuable artifacts but in the house. The Carpet beetles actually are a fairly common household pest. They’ll often lay eggs in areas like around the air vents, larva hatch out and they spread around the home. They are very rare well they just damage any synthetic carpet or other material materials. But we’ll feed on organic fibers, Persian rugs, other expensive textiles wool, the Carpet beetles are probably a bigger problem with clothes than even close mouths. Any organic fibers sale will leather animal fur are all at risk for infestation from carpet beetle larva. This makes the carpet beetle larva a major problem to many homeowners. The main difficulty dealing with Carpet beetles is they often will find out of the way places to begin to spread around your home they can enter the home through openings or be carried in on plants that are brought in the house once inside beetles find a you know abundant food supply because you can imagine it doesn’t take a very large crumb to sustain a an insect probably doesn’t weigh more than a gram and then that they’ll lay their eggs in there. The larvae will hatch quickly multiply and then fast your home. It’s like I said earlier museums. Any can be especially if you have you know, hiring carpets they’re generally not synthetic materials are made of organic materials. The again, the adults have a short live life really, couple of weeks to six or eight weeks. The larvae are the ones that are responsible for the damage to the household items. And they’ll feed on a variety of hair, fur, feathers, horns, carcasses, dead insects, stereo cereal, they do in fact stored grains as like a stored product fast nuts, seeds, spices, flour, they love your clothes, your drapes, make a mess have the carpet. On fabrics, they’ll mostly graze on the surface, but they can make irregular irregularly shaped holes. The bigger problem with like sweaters, they can, they don’t necessarily always make big holes in the sweater, but they will not on the fabric to a point the strands of the fabric will weaken it and then they the the weave starts to unravel. Some Carpet beetles will feed on food and pantries. Again, the adults feed largely on pollen and nectar and they’re, they’re generally carried in the homes on flowers, Indian flower pots and stuff.
