How to recognize termites in your home

By Fred Talley, Faith Pest Control

Termites in homes here in Jasper, Georgia and surrounding areas are similar to most other areas in the southern United States. They can remain undetected for long periods of time. This allows them to do serious damage without being discovered.

Termites occur naturally in our soil here in the southeast. Most any yard in a suburban neighborhood will likely have a resident population of subterranean termites feeding on firewood, garden stakes, fallen limbs, wood fence posts, tree stumps, etc. That’s what they do in nature. They convert cellulose into nutrients. Hence…tree branches become dark, rich topsoil!

Even though termites are valuable in nature, you don’t want them feeding on your home. Therefore it is advantageous to you, the homeowner, to know how to recognize signs of a possible termite infestation.

5 signs that your home might be infested with termites:

  1. Swarming termites in the springtime
  2. Mud tubes, or tunnels, on foundation walls or sheetrock
  3. Bubbling or peeling paint on sheetrock
  4. Presence of wings on window sills or floor underneath windows
  5. Soft, spongy wood or flooring

If you notice any of the above in or around your home, you should call your pest management professional immediately and have them come out and take a look. If you do in fact, have a termite infestation, you want to get rid of them as quickly as possible in order to avoid serious damage to your home.
